What Five Hundred Spins Will and Will Not Tell You

A sample of five hundred rounds is the standard informal test, and it is large enough to be genuinely useful for some questions and hopelessly small for others. Knowing which is which is the entire value of running it.

What the sample answers well

The proportion of spins returning nothing. The proportion returning less than the stake. The distribution of cascade lengths. The realistic spins-per-hour rate at your own clicking speed. All four stabilise quickly because they are properties of frequent events.

These are the figures that describe what an evening feels like, and none of them appears in any specification. Five hundred rounds produces them at a precision more than sufficient for a decision about whether to play the game at all.

What it cannot answer

The return percentage. Feature outcomes carry a large share of the return on a high-variance build, features arrive perhaps once in a few hundred rounds, and a sample containing one or two of them is dominated by whatever those two happened to produce.

Running it properly

Record as you go rather than afterwards. Working through the Big Bass Megaways free demo in blocks of a hundred with the balance noted at each boundary takes about forty minutes and produces five checkpoints instead of one total, which is considerably more informative.

Keep a tally of feature triggers and the spin number at which each occurred. Two or three intervals is a poor estimate of the average, but it is enough to distinguish a game that triggers every eighty spins from one that triggers every four hundred, and that is a difference worth knowing.

  • Tally dead spins as a proportion
  • Record the spin number of each feature trigger
  • Time one block to get a real spins-per-hour figure
  • Resist concluding anything about the return percentage

The trap in the exercise

Concluding that the game is generous or stingy. Both conclusions are properties of the sample rather than of the game, both will contradict themselves next time, and both will be remembered long after the sample size has been forgotten. That is the specific way this exercise misleads people who run it carefully.

Why a demo is the right place

Because the arithmetic is identical to the paid build — the outcome is decided by a server-side generator that does not know which mode requested it — and because five hundred rounds at a real stake to answer a structural question is an expensive way to read a specification.

What to do with the result

Write down four figures and move on. Dead spin proportion, median cascade length, observed trigger interval, and rounds per hour. They remain true for the life of the build, they take a page to record, and they answer the only question that matters before opening a game again.
